Sanofi’s SITE study results for Madhya Pradesh show nearly 72% of the surveyed population suffers from uncontrolled diabetes
Another study highlight is the alarming number of patients who suffer from diabetes, hypertension or both

Bhopal: Aventis Pharma Limited (Group Sanofi) today announced results of the SITE (Screening India’s Twin Epidemic) study for the state of Madhya Pradesh as well as the national results for the eight states – Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, West Bengal and Gujarat. The Sanofi SITE study for Madhya Pradesh included close to 1900 patients in the state across Bhopal and Indore.
SITE, conducted by Sanofi, is the first cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed cases of diabetes and hypertension using a sample size of nearly 16,000 patients who visit General Practitioners and Consulting Physicians in the major Indian cities. The study has surveyed patients across 800 centers mainly in Madhya Pradesh Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, New Delhi, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat.
Dr. Sushil Jindal, Consultant Endocrinologist, Diabetes & Hormone Centre, Bhopal and Dr. Idris Ahmed Khan, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Bombay Hospital, Indore are the State Coordinators of the Sanofi SITE study in Madhya Pradesh.
Says Dr. Sushil Jindal, The Sanofi SITE Madhya Pradesh data reveals that diabetes and hypertension are indeed becoming a twin epidemic in the state, with 23% of those surveyed suffering from both diseases. Furthermore, in nearly 7% of the newly diagnosed cases the patients did not know that they had diabetes.  Shockingly, even amongst the diabetics undergoing treatment, 72% were ‘uncontrolled’ thereby emphasizing the need not only for regular testing but also for greater awareness about the correct treatment regime.”
Adds Dr. Idris Ahmed Khan Bombay Hospital, Indore, “The Sanofi SITE Madhya Pradesh study shows that of the patients who were hypertensive, over 81% did not have their hypertension under control.  The data further reveals that 15% of the hypertension patients suffer from kidney complications. Surprisingly, amongst those screened 23% had no idea they were suffering from hypertension and were newly diagnosed.
Says Dr. Bhaswati Mukherjee, Associate Director, Medical Affairs Cardio-Metabolism, Sanofi India, “Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension have a major impact not only on national health but also on the economy. Through the Sanofi SITE study we hope to provide medical professionals with valuable insights on the twin epidemic of Diabetes and Hypertension. We also want to create awareness amongst them and patients about screening for these diseases regularly. The Sanofi SITE study is a testament of our commitment to disease management and we want to be closely involved in addressing one of India’s key public health issues.”

Text Box: Key findings of the SITE study among those surveyed in Madhya Pradesh are as follows:
• 63% of people surveyed in Madhya Pradesh suffer from diabetes, hypertension or both
• Only 36.2% of Diabetics and 37% of Hypertensives had a positive family history
• 22% of the diabetic population suffers from kidney complications
• 23% suffer from both diabetes and hypertension (leading to a possible twin epidemic)
• Of the diabetic population already aware of their condition, almost two-of-every-three (72%) had ‘uncontrolled’ diabetes (Hba1c levels > 7%) and of the known hypertensive population (81%) four-out-of-five were uncontrolled

Dr. Shashank Joshi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Lilavati Hospital and National Coordinator of the study says, “The Sanofi SITE National study shows that 60% of the population is suffering from diabetes, hypertension or both. This figure is alarmingly high and not only demands immediate attention but also the implementation of necessary measures. Also worth highlighting is that nearly 60% of the non-hypertensive population screened were pre-hypertensive, and thus at high risk of becoming future hypertensives. In addition, nearly one of five patients (18%) in population screened were pre For further information please contact
