Seher on BIG Magic will take you to the
tour of Omkareshwar
Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva
This Thursday’s episode of Seher on BIG
Magic will take you to the tour of Omkareshwar Temple , situated about 77 km from Indore, is a sacred island comprising of two lofty hills
and is divided by a valley in such a way that it appears in the shape of the
sacred Hindu symbol 'Om' from above. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It has drawn pilgrims over hundreds of
generations and is situated at the confluence of the rivers, Narmada and Kaveri.
The devout gather to pray before the Jyotirlinga at the temple of Shri Omkar
Mandhata.
Shiva
Purana describes the greatness of Omkareshwar and Mammaleshwar. It is believed
that Narada (son of Lord Brahma), known for his non-stop cosmic travel, visited
Vindhya Parvat. In his spicy way Narada told Vindhya Parvat about the greatness
of Mount Meru. This made Vindhya jealous and he decided he wanted to be bigger
than Meru. Vindhya started worshipping Lord Shiva and practiced severe penance
for nearly six months. As a result Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed him with
his desired boon. On a request of all the gods and the sages Lord Shiva made
two parts of the lingas-- One half is called Omkareshwara and the other
Mamaleshwar or Amareshwar.
Another
story from Hindu scriptures say that there was a great war between Devas and
Danavas(demon), in which Danavas won. This was a major setback for Devas and
hence Devas prayed to Lord Shiva. Pleased with their prayer, Lord Shiva emerged
in the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and defeated Danavas.
Omkareshwar Temple is built in the Nagara
style and is characterized by a lofty shikhara. The Omkareshwar is not affixed
to the ground but is naturally installed there. There is always water around
it. The significance of this linga is not situated below the cupola. The idol
of Lord Shiva is situated on the top of the temple. The temple can be reached
by ferry from the banks of the river. A huge fair is organized here on the day
of Kartik Poornima.
