Thyroid Disorders affecting 4.2 crore Indians every year1

Thyroid Disorders affecting 4.2 crore Indians every year1
On World Thyroid Day, the Indian Thyroid Society alerts general public and doctors on the highly prevalent and undiagnosed disease
Lucknow, May 19, 2011: Ahead of World Thyroid Day, the message from the Indian Thyroid Society and Abbott India Limited is that untreated thyroid disorders are very common and it is estimated that 4.2 crore Indians1 are suffering from thyroid disorders with almost 90% undiagnosed.2 Often people suffer from a variety of ailments completely unaware that these could be linked to thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid problem is perhaps the second most common endocrine disease next to diabetes.1

In order to create a greater understanding on the awareness and diagnosis of thyroid disorders and the co-morbidities associated with it, 40, 000 patients will be examined through 700 thyroid testing camps held across the country ahead of World Thyroid Day.

According to Dr. R V Jayakumar, President of The Indian Thyroid Society (ITS), “Millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid problem, and don't realize that it is the source of the other serious health challenges they face. Obesity, depression, fatigue, high cholesterol, infertility and many other conditions are very often the direct result of undiagnosed and untreated thyroid conditions. Thyroid disorders are also known to result in dyslipidemia which is an abnormal amount of cholesterol and/or fat in the blood. Dyslipidemia is known to be an important contributor to cardiovascular risks including all cause mortality.”

He added, “In order to avoid complications health wise it is important to go for a regular thyroid check up to ensure a long and healthy life. Think Thyroid, Think Life.”

The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland located in the 'neck' region, just under the Adam’s apple. It makes, stores and releases thyroid hormones that influence almost every cell in the body. In short, the thyroid gland facilitates smooth functioning of our body.

Dr. Sharad Kumar, Consultant Endocrinologist and Associate Professor Eras Medical College, Lucknow says, “The most common thyroid disorder, hypothyroidism, results when your thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones. Hypothyroidism is often not suspected during the routine clinical assessment. Since thyroid hormone testing is not a routine test, the diagnosis is often not confirmed for years. If there are vague symptoms like weakness, a slight weight gain, depression, constipation and heavy periods, it is important to consult your local physician. There is no harm requesting for appropriate tests, which will most likely include a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test. The sensitive Thyroid Stimulating Hormone test is the most valuable single method to discover or confirm hypothyroidism. It enables doctors to identify even mild cases of hypothyroidism before symptoms appear.”

Edgen Murray establishes office in Mumbai to service growing energy sector demand in India

Edgen Murray establishes office in Mumbai to service growing energy sector demand in India

·                   Increased business opportunities in India as a result of growing energy demand and project needs
·                   Opening new India head office in Mumbai to complement Delhi office in response to market demand
·                   Complements investment in state-of-the-art distribution centre and Asia Pacific HQ in Singapore

Edgen Murray, a leading global distributor of speciality steel products and logistics solutions for the energy sector, is expanding its reach in India, with the opening of its new India head office based in Mumbai.

The new office will primarily service Edgen Murray’s offshore exploration and production (E&P) business in India, moving the company closer to this customer base. The company has historically supplied major steel packages to India upstream projects including the Tapti and Panna oil and gas fields and also the Hydra Project. The downstream and power sectors will however continue to be important markets for Edgen Murray’s Mumbai and Delhi operations, building on existing supply to key power sector projects.

The establishment of a presence closer to customers is supported by positive sector trends. India is currently the world’s fifth largest energy consumer and its demand is continuously growing.[1] Meanwhile, India is also forecast to become the world’s third largest steel consuming country after China and the US in 2011, according to the World Steel Association.

India’s offshore sector growth is expected to be strong in the next five years, specifically in relation to deepwater fields coming on-stream inside this period.[2] India’s ongoing demand for steel is also significant. According to the World Steel Association, demand grew 7.5 percent during the global financial crisis and is expected to grow further in 2011.

“The country’s large natural energy reserves coupled with the ever growing energy needs has resulted in a surge in energy-related projects in recent years,” says Michael Craig, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Eastern Hemisphere, Edgen Murray. “This has created an increase in demand as well as new opportunities in an expanding Asia Pacific market.”

“Opening an office in Mumbai delivers customers a range of important benefits. From developing a deeper understanding of a customer’s requirements to being better able to match our expertise to specific needs and respond at greater speed,” adds Mr. Craig.

Edgen Murray’s presence in India is complemented by its expanded operations in Singapore, where in December 2010 the company opened a new, state-of-the-art distribution centre to increase its ability to service customers in the region. The new $25 million SGD, 18,000m2 facility provides capacity to stock in excess of 30,000 tonnes of product, representing the single largest capital investment made in the history of the company.

Excalibur Lady Passionately feminine, exclusively mechanical

Excalibur Lady
Passionately feminine, exclusively mechanical

Combining the power of an iconic model with the subtle elegance of a totally feminine timepiece, the Excalibur Lady collection from ROGER DUBUIS opens a new chapter in the history of the Geneva-based Manufacture. Incorporating all the traits on which the reputation of the Excalibur collection is based, this feminine collection is distinguished by a finer silhouette that shows off its harmonious curves. This look is echoed in the excellent finishing touches, revealing a ROGER DUBUIS mechanical movement that meets the most demanding requirements of haute horlogerie. Passionately feminine, exclusively mechanical: this is the Excalibur Lady collection.
If the sparkling beauty and slender markers of this collection were to be unveiled on the runway, we would think of them in terms of haute couture. More discreetly entwined around a feminine wrist, Excalibur Lady proudly bears the attributes of haute horlogerie. Through the boldness of its expression as much as by its mechanical movement, the new Excalibur Lady collection from ROGER DUBUIS is part of a decidedly contemporary movement: a spirit that deftly combines assertive femininity and the mechanical excellence of haute horlogerie.
From the Excalibur collection that has defined the finest periods of the Manufacture ROGER DUBUIS from 2005 onwards, the new Lady collection has retained the features that form its emblematic codes: three horns for the bracelet fixing, a highly distinctive grooved bezel and slender Roman numerals. These new aesthetic preferences help to create a more subtle and decidedly feminine silhouette. From its masculine predecessor, it seeks to retain this unique character, this touch of extravagance that incontrovertibly marks it out from its peers in the world of haute horlogerie.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT ?

FIGHT OR FLIGHT ?

- FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP MIKE TYSON SHARES HIS LIFE AND HIS LOVE OF BIRDS IN A SURPRISING NEW SERIES, TAKING ON TYSON -
Premiering On Animal Planet on June 6th

"The first thing I ever loved in my life was a pigeon." -- Mike Tyson.

You know Mike Tyson as the former world heavyweight champion. In June 2011, tune in to Animal Planet to meet Mike Tyson, the pigeon lover.

Heavyweight boxing legend and Brooklyn native, Mike Tyson always has loved breeding and raising pigeons. These birds have been an integral part of his life from his childhood. In fact, Mike threw his first punch when a neighbourhood bully killed one of his beloved pigeons and threw it in his face. Of course, Mike would go on to be one of the most famous, and infamous, champions in boxing (and sports) history. And through it all, his pigeons and his rooftop pigeon coops remained his one constant and secret solace. Now, in the new Animal Planet series TAKING ON TYSON, Mike goes beyond just raising his feathered friends – he will race them for the very first time. With unprecedented access to the neighbourhood haunts he grew up in and lifelong friends who surround him, this docudrama introduces audiences to the highly competitive, bizarrely fascinating subculture of pigeon racing. The stakes are high in a sport that has just as much machismo as boxing. But this time it’s not about money; it’s about bragging rights.

TAKING ON TYSON will air every night at 9 pm from 6th June to 19th June on Animal Planet.

From the rooftops of Jersey City to the streets of Brooklyn, this unique series profiles
The enigmatic Mike Tyson as the boxing legend reconnects with his roots and returns to his childhood neighbourhood to face his next challenge. Tyson’s pigeons have provided him with tranquillity and escape throughout his tumultuous life. Now, along with a band of close friends who share his love for these avian athletes, he enters the realm of pigeon racing. TAKING ON TYSON is an enriching window into Mike Tyson’s complex life, where the road to self- awareness, the path to inner peace and the vision into the future… is with these birds.

“The first thing I ever loved in my life was a pigeon. I don't know why… I feel ridiculoustrying to explain it,” says Tyson. “Pigeons are a part of my life. It’s a constant with my sanity in a weird way; this is just what I do. If I'm lucky enough to die an old man, I'm going to have birds.”

Supporting the novice racer are the members of Tyson’s Corner: Mario Costa, his lifelong friend and promoter/manager; Vinnie Torre, his esteemed and respected pigeon trainer; and the Roman Brothers, his pigeon caretakers. His rivals include the younger yet more experienced racers Joe Green and Helder Rodrigues.
